Reo Rua

E ngā mana, e ngā waka, e ngā reo, tēnā tātou katoa, koutou i manaaki i a tātou tamariki mokopuna, rātou ngā rangatira mō āpōpō, nō reirā, nei rā te mihi matakuikui ki a tātou katoa

Te Ao Māori and Te Ao Haka are an essential valued methods of teaching and learning to our

Reo Rua program to empower our students.

Reo Rua education is a method of teaching that aims to assist learners to become bilingual.
It involves learning opportunities in two languages, usually through the first language of

empowerment.
It means:

 Valuing a child's first language as this language sets a strong platform for learning.
 Assisting students to learn and understand the second language through their knowledge of

the first language.

 Assisting students to learn and develop students who have come from Kura Rūmaki and

extend their knowledge of Te Ao Māori and Te Ao Haka

 Ensuring students have strong knowledge and use of two languages for higher

understanding of Te Ao Māori.
 Educational achievement.
 Social advantage.

Reo Rua is the Bilingual Education unit at Queen Elizabeth College. Students are immersed
in Te Ao Māori, with the majority of the teaching in Te Matui, the school Marae.
Māori language is spoken on a daily basis and Reo Rua students are encouraged to
communicate in this medium. Karakia, Waiata, Kōrero, Whakarongo, Pānui and Tuhituhi are
woven through the teaching and Kapa Haka and Ngā Manu Kōrero are an important part of

student learning.

Important Māori celebrations are avenues of learning, such as Waitangi Day, Matariki and Te

Wiki o Te Reo Māori.

Students learn from our Reo Rua Bilingual Education unit the tools to gain the skills and
knowledge of Te Ao Māori and Te Ao Haka in their whanau, hapū, iwi, kura and society.
