The Queen Elizabeth College Service Academy commits itself to provide life skills, motivational learning, training and vocational options that will allow youth in the Manawatu area to confidently and successfully establish their place within and contribute to the local community and New Zealand society
The Queen Elizabeth College Service Academy conduct several programmes and training over a ten-month period on the college grounds, surrounding Palmerston North Area, NZ Defence Force camps and bases and at times the Land Training Doctrine Training Group (LTDG) Waiouru.
We offer:
A structured military-based environment opportunities to attend several courses within the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF)
Opportunities to develop service skills and knowledge
QUALIFICATIONS
Formal qualifications for the programme are from NZQA. NZDF conducted courses are attendance only, yet compulsory for ALL students. Students are required to participate in all Service Academy activities and will work towards NCEA Credits in order to achieve NZQA qualifications
NZDF COURSES
The NZDF through the Youth Development Unit, Youth Life Skills Platoon, have committed to the Service Academy programme. With strong links tied to the NZDF. The Manawatu area has a proud military history. This relationship continues today through the Service Academy programme.
Five courses have been developed and ALL students must attend three of these to complete the Academy programme.
*12 Day Military Induction Course, Waiouru
The aim of the Induction Course is to introduce all Service Academy students from the Lower North Island to Life Skills, Ethos and Values, and to foster teamwork. This will be an intense 12 days and will push each student’s boundaries, mental and physical limits.
5 Day Basic Leadership Course, R.N.A.F Base, Ohakea
Five students per Academy displaying Leadership qualities will have the opportunity to attend this course. The aim of the Basic Leadership Course is to instruct and test each student in a Leadership role and develop their skills. NCEA credits will be on offer during this course.
*5 Day Military Skills Week, Totara Reserve, Pohangina Vallery
The aim of the Military Skills Week is to instruct Service Academy students from the Lower North Island in Outdoor lessons and bush survival skills. This course will aid students in gaining NCEA credits in Outdoor Education and confirm skills in the outdoors prior to the end of year Adventure Challenge.
5 Day Advanced Leadership Course, R.N.A.F Base, Whenuapai, Auckland
Two students per Academy will be chosen by the NZDF that have displayed a high level of leadership skills during the Basic Leadership Course. The aim of the course is to test each student in a leadership role and further develop their skills. NCEA credits will be on offer during the course.
*5 Adventure Challenge, Rotorua
This is the culmination of the Queen Elizabeth College Service Academy Programme. Students from the Lower North Island will compete in the Lower North Island Inter Academy Endurance Competition. This will test each students Physical and Mental ability, organisation skills and teamwork.
*Students are required to attend these courses to complete the Service Academy Programme
